Prong, Bezel or Channel, Which Setting Actually Suits Your Lifestyle

Choosing a diamond is only half the decision. The setting decides how it catches the light and how well it copes with real life. Here is how the three most popular styles compare.

Prong settings, the classic choice

Prongs are the small metal claws that hold a diamond in place, and they are popular for a reason. Because very little metal covers the stone, more light reaches it from every angle, which gives you maximum sparkle.

The trade-off is that they can snag on knitwear and hair, and over time they wear down, so they need to be checked regularly. If you want brilliance above all and do not mind a quick annual inspection, prongs are hard to beat.

Bezel settings, the secure choice

A bezel wraps a thin metal rim around the edge of the diamond, holding it firmly in place. This is the most protective option, shielding the edges from knocks and leaving nothing to catch on clothing.

It suits people who work with their hands, train often, or do not want to worry about their ring. The compromise is that the rim covers a little of the stone, so you lose some light, though many people love the sleek, modern look it creates.

Channel settings, the everyday choice

In a channel setting, a row of smaller diamonds sits between two metal walls, with no prongs at all. It is most often used for wedding bands and the sides of an engagement ring.

The stones sit flush and are well protected, which makes channel set pieces ideal for daily wear. One thing worth knowing is that channel set bands can be harder to resize, so it helps to be confident about your size before you commit.

Which one should you choose?

Think about an ordinary week rather than a special occasion. If you type all day, cook, train or travel, a bezel or channel setting will give you peace of mind. If you want the brightest, most traditional sparkle and are happy to look after it, prongs are the answer.
